Up People

  • Homeownership Counseling

As a HUD-approved Housing Counseling Agency CHDC assists about 1,000 households per year with first-time buyer, financial fitness, and post-purchase homeownership counseling.

  • First Time Homebuyers
  • CHDC has assisted 400+ low-income families to become homeowners with sustainable financing. Most purchased in Richmond and nearby neighborhoods.

  • Foreclosure Intervention

CHDC is Contra Costa County's largest provider of foreclosure and mortgage counseling to low-income homeowners in trouble. We also help prevent the conditions that lead to foreclosure.

  • Financial Fitness

CHDC helps people with low incomes keep and build their assets. Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Contra Costa returned over $3.5 million to low-income taxpayers throughout Contra Costa in 2009 by providing free, IRS-certified tax filing assistance. In five years, more than 230 people have completed our class on family budgeting, credit repair, savings and investment. Through our CC-MATCH IDA program, 60 low-income savers have achieved their financial goal of purchasing their first home, investing in a small business, or paying for post secondary education.

Building Up Neighborhoods

  • Creating Affordable Homes

CHDC has produced 200+ new or rehabilitated homes for sale to low-income families all over Richmond, many in infill locations where our new homes upgrade the whole block.

  • Affordable Housing Development

CHDC has a 5-year pipeline of 600+ new homes, apartments and mixed-use developments planned for sale and rental to low-income families in the Richmond area.

  • Quality Rental Opportunities

CHDC is the sponsor of nearly 700 rental units throughout Richmond for families and seniors with incomes from 0-60% of the area median.

  • Keep North Richmond Beautiful

CHDC facilitates local leadership to reduce illegal dumping, eliminate blight, promote recycling and restore parks and creeks in our headquarters neighborhood of North Richmond.

  • Environmentally Healthy Development

All CHDC developments use state-of-the-art systems to conserve energy and reduce costs. One upcoming rental complex, Lillie Mae Jones Plaza, includes solar panels. Staff gets ongoing training to meet the highest standards for environmental responsibility.

  • Local Hiring

CHDC recruits locally for open positions and seeks to contract with local, minority-owned and women-owned businesses. Our North Richmond YouthBuild program trained and placed 100+ local young adults in living wage jobs from 2004 to 2009. CHDC construction projects offer jobs through Richmond Works. More than half our staff lives in Richmond.
