Education and Counseling for Homeowners

Overview

The new responsibilities of homeownership can feel overwhelming at first. Ongoing maintenance, unexpected or expensive repairs, insurance, taxes and refinancing all raise questions and risks. All homeowners should be prepared for emergencies such as natural disasters or unexpected medical bills. In low-income communities, homeowners are targeted for additional dangers such as:

  • Advertising for financing schemes that are likely to endanger a homeowner's investment.
  • Home equity scams, especially if the homeowner has a low fixed income, has built up significant equity, or is having trouble managing maintenance and repairs. Older homeowners are often the most vulnerable.
  • Loan modification scams

CHDC educates, provides resources and counsels homeowners about how to protect themselves, preserve their equity, be prepared for financial or natural emergencies, and reap the long term benefits of stable homeownership.
