Education and Counseling for Homeowners

Overview

New homeowners have responsibilities that can feel overwhelming at first. Ongoing maintenance, unexpected or expensive repairs, insurance, taxes and refinancing all raise questions and risks. All homeowners should be prepared for emergencies such as natural disasters, unexpected medical bills or the like. In low-income communities, homeowners face additional dangers such as:

  • Heavily targeted advertising for financing schemes that are likely to endanger a homeowner's investment.
  • Targeting by home equity scams, especially if the homeowner has a low fixed income, has built up significant equity, or is having trouble managing maintenance and repairs. Older homeowners are often the most vulnerable.

CHDC educates, provides resources for, and counsels homeowners to protect themselves, preserve their equity, be prepared for financial as well as natural emergencies, and reap the long term benefits of stable homeownership.

How the Program Works

If you own your home you may be eligible to take CHDC's Post Purchase Homeownership Workshop Series. Workshops are offered once a month on Saturday mornings between February and July. We can also assist you individually with questions about taxes, insurance, refinancing, remodeling, and other non-delinquency related issues, i.e. when there is no problem with your current mortgage. To sign up for the class or arrange for individual counseling, please call CHDC at 510-412-9290 x17.

However, if you are having any kind of problem with your current mortgage, please go to our Foreclosure Intervention and Loan Modification Program.
