When Community Heritage Senior Apartments opened in June 2000, it became the first and only HUD 202 senior housing facility in North Richmond. The development offers 51 one-bedroom units. Residents have very low-incomes and range in age from 62 to 90+ years old; many had already lived in North Richmond for many years before moving to the development.
Community Heritage is beautifully landscaped and offers a community fruit and vegetable garden, kitchen, library, computer room and two common rooms that can be used for parties and community gatherings. A property manager, service coordinator and maintenance staff are located on-site. Residents have formed a tenants association, a quilting club and a neighborhood watch group. The service coordinator leads holiday gatherings as well as field trips to cultural events, shopping centers and banks in a van provided by Eden Housing Corporation.
CHDC developed Community Heritage in partnership with Eden Housing Corporation, the Contra Costa County Redevelopment Agency, and the City of Richmond.
