Jelani Park, originally intended to be a 22-unit townhouse development, was abandoned before completion by its for-profit developer in the early 1990s. Only four of the 10 finished homes were sold, and the empty units were taken over by squatters. Located just a block from BART, in the heart of a bustling neighborhood of single-family homes, Jelani Park became an eyesore and a nuisance. CHDC purchased the site, demolished one derelict building, rehabilitated five others, and redesigned the project according to neighborhood wishes. The finished project consists of 13 single-family, detached three- and four-bedroom homes.
